Home of the $100 fire hoop

Finally got the website done and live. Check it out and let me know what you think or place an order….

lovefullcircle asked: How is the fire hoop market? Do you make a lot of sales? What's the market like on etsy?

So far… slow. It’s all about word of mouth, and it takes a while, but I only recently started so I think it’ll pick up. As for etsy, I’ll definitely be moving away from them and onto my own site, they just aren’t where people go looking for fire hoops I think.

  • sooo i wanna start selling my hoops on etsy. i can figure out the manufacturing part, and the sales part, but how exactly do u ship a non travel hoop/ is it expensive?? talk to meh!
  • Short answer... yes, very. If it coils down you can make it a little bit cheaper, but honestly it's still gonna be in the range of $20. It's pretty much cost prohibitive to sell just standard practice hoops through etsy, what with shipping, listing fees, and etsy's percentage.... not to mention paypal's percentage. I'd recommend only selling practice hoops to locals or at festivals.

symphonyofthecosmos asked: !!! I'm so glad I found this blog. You taught at FLAME? Do you live in Georgia?

I did indeed teach at FLAME… but I don’t live in GA, right now I live up in WV, and in a month I’m headed West and hopefully moving into the Vulcan in Oakland.

At long last, the first small batch of fire hoops has gone up on etsy today. There have been some design changes. To allow for easier shipping/travel all wicks are now removable (threaded bases). Also, now all wicks are knotted rather than wrapped to reduce hardware, and all the spines bases have 400+degree heat tape. All this comes at the SLIGHTLY elevated price of $100 (shipping included)… which means basically a $10 increase. This is pure added material cost, still keeping this as low as I can for y’all. So without further ado… here’s the direct link : http://www.etsy.com/listing/96054698/polypro-fire-hoop-shipping-included-in   (or just click the photo)

How the…  How are the wicks secured?  Not trying to make you come off ancient Chinese secret or anything, but safety is a factor.

I assure you, they’re every bit as safe as any fire hoop can be. There’s a piece swaged onto the cable beneath the wicking, it’s not just knotted onto the cable directly don’t worry. In fact that connection is a whole lot stronger than quite a few hoops I know of that use epoxy.

My reaction to “Polypro vs the Black Stuff”

When I see people railing on new hoopers for going polypro, or attempting to apply some kind of step by step progression to hoopers it makes me FURIOUS. Who are you to dictate the steps through which people must progress in hooping? Who are you to say someone can’t go polypro whenever the hell they feel like it? Personally speaking I had only been hooping for slightly over two months before I got fed up with the ridiculously heavy and sloppy beginner’s hoop I had. Not everyone progresses at the same speed. Also anyone trying to badmouth hoopers who want to stay in the same place, or who  make slow progression(or none at at all)…. two words : FUCK OFF.

Again personally speaking I’m all for pushing this little art of ours absolutely as far as it can go, but that doesn’t mean that hoopers who are happy hooping at their waist or doing simple tricks are in any way wrong. Can’t hooping just be fun?

This is all aimed at the hooping world in general, but more specifically at “Dudehoops” little tirade down below which comes under the guise “Polypro vs the Black Stuff” (which doesn’t allow comments). Who exactly are you to condemn your fellow hoopers for wanting to do, well, anything really? If someone wants to tape their polypro, it’s still going to be lighter than a polyethylene hoop with tape. Besides, for many polypro users it isn’t about the weight, it’s about the stiffness (and overarching all of this, it’s NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS). Rather than the slopping about you get from lower psi(lighter) polyethylene tubing, polypro is very stiff, providing much more accurate and decisive rebounds in breaks, not to mention personally a far better feel in the hand.

I’m fine with everyone having their own opinion, but when you do so in a public forum such as tumblr, that opinion is put out there for anyone to read. Judgmental bullshit like this only serves to discourage, it doesn’t help anyone.

So anyway, long story short keep your judgmental, unfounded opinions to yourself. Most of us came to the hoop world because we loved the freedom it offered.

So allow me a brief moment of shameless self/event promotion. Kinetic Fire was AMAZING last year, and I’m thrilled to be teaching this year, so if you’re anywhere in the area you should come out, May 10-13 in College Corner, OH. Check it out at kineticfire.org tickets go on sale March 15th.

Clearly cylons. Someone destroy these before it’s too late! (On another note I realllly want some)
